Frederick County Workforce Services Unveils New Mobile Career Center
FREDERICK, MD. (July 16, 2025) — County Executive Jessica Fitzwater was joined by community partners and staff from the offices of Senator Van Hollen, Senator Alsobrooks, Representative Raskin, and Representative McClain Delaney to celebrate the unveiling of Frederick County Workforce Service’s new Mobile Career Center. This new initiative will bring unemployment and workforce resources directly to people in underserved and rural areas of Frederick County.
“While Frederick County boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state at around 2.6%, we know that many people still face barriers to employment — particularly those without reliable transportation or internet access. The Mobile Career Center will help close those gaps,” said County Executive Fitzwater. “We are incredibly grateful for our congressional and community partners who have made this project possible.”
The state-of-the-art Mobile Career Center includes six computer-equipped workstations with internet access (including one ADA-accessible station), one dedicated staff workstation, a printer and scanner, and an outdoor awning and presentation screen for use at community events and workshops.
Once fully launched, the Mobile Career Center will travel throughout Frederick County to provide services such as job search assistance and resume support, interview coaching and career planning, digital literacy and skills development, referrals to training and supportive services, youth and young adult career exploration, and on-site workforce outreach at job fairs, community centers, and local events.
“We’re excited about the possibilities this Mobile Career Center brings,” said Michelle Day, Director of Frederick County Workforce Services. “It allows us to be where we’re needed most, offering job seekers tools, encouragement, and guidance to move forward in their careers.”
In 2021, Frederick County Workforce Services proposed the Mobile Career Center project under the Community Project Funding process, a federal initiative that allows members of Congress to request funding for local priorities. Congressman Raskin, whose district included parts of Frederick County until 2022, secured the funding on behalf of Frederick County.
The proposal was strengthened by letters of support from local nonprofit and community-based partners, including the Asian American Center of Frederick, Seton Center in Emmitsburg, Frederick County Public Libraries, and Frederick County Public Schools' Career and Technology Education program.
In May 2022, the U.S. Department of Labor informed Frederick County Workforce Services that the project was approved for funding under the Community Project Funding appropriation. Additional support came from the American Rescue Plan Act, allowing for the full design and customization of the Mobile Career Center.
“With this federal funding from the American Rescue Plan, Frederick County is launching an innovative solution to help connect more Marylanders with job opportunities and resources. The Mobile Career Center will bring professional development resources directly to residents across the County — strengthening our local workforce and opening the doors of economic opportunity for Frederick County residents,” said Senator Van Hollen.
“Frederick’s Mobile Career Center will fuel Maryland’s economy and expand our workforce across the greater Western Maryland region. I am excited to join our community in welcoming the federally funded Mobile Career Center and know they will do incredible work empowering career exploration in our fastest growing area in the state,” said Senator Alsobrooks.
“Equipping workers for success in a rapidly changing economy requires coordination at every level—local, state and federal. I’m proud to partner with County Executive Jessica Fitzwater and so many of Frederick County’s dedicated state and local leaders who are showing up and standing up for our workforce. Together, we’re committed to ensuring Marylanders have the opportunities, training and support they need to secure good-paying jobs and build lasting careers right here in our communities,” said Congresswoman McClain Delaney.
