How to Budget While Job Searching
by Teri Bisceglia, Employment & Training Consultant
Job hunting can feel like a full-time job—with no paycheck (yet). With limited income, every dollar matters. Here are some steps on how to manage your money wisely:
1. Go into Survival Mode – Cut to Essentials
Focus on essentials only: rent, food, utilities, phone, and transportation. Pause nonessentials like subscriptions, streaming, and dining out. Delay big purchases unless necessary.
2. Know What You’ve Got – Know Your Numbers
Check your savings, any income (freelance, part-time, unemployment), and how long your money can last based on your monthly needs. Even knowing you’ve got, say, 3 months of runway gives you a timeline, reduces the pressure, and helps you plan smarter.
3. Job Hunt like a Budget Hawk
Use free job boards & resources: LinkedIn, Maryland Workforce Exchange, Indeed, Frederick County Workforce Services, and your local Frederick County Public Library branch.
Skip pricey courses unless absolutely necessary.
Prepare for interview costs like transportation and work clothes.
Ask for referrals—they can speed up your search.
4. Build a Simple, Flexible Budget
Try one of these methods:
50/30/20 Rule (Needs-Essentials/Wants-Fun-Entertainment/Savings-Debt-Emergency Fund)
Zero-Based Budget (every dollar assigned)
Cash/Envelope System (limits for categories like groceries or fun)
Do weekly check-ins to stay on track and catch surprises early.
5. Find Temporary, Part-Time or Gig Work
Keep income flowing with short-term jobs:
Gig/Freelance work (Uber, DoorDash, Upwork, Fiverr)
Retail, customer service, or tutoring
Sell unused items online
Even part-time work helps bridge the gap—and might lead to something long-term.
6. Set a Daily Job Search Routine
Schedule time for applications and networking. Track your efforts using a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets or a job search app like Maryland’s BEACON if you’re receiving Unemployment Insurance. Remember, don’t forget to take breaks. Self care helps you stay focused when it’s time to sit down to work on those applications.
7. Stay Realistic and Positive
Keep spending in check. Celebrate small wins—every step forward counts.
Job searching can be stressful. Budgeting during a job search isn’t easy, but with the right approach, you can stay grounded and focused while you find your next opportunity.
