Preparing for a Job Fair

Maximize Your Job Fair Experience: What to Know Before You Go

By Patti Lyman, Employment and Training Consultant

Attending a job fair can be a great opportunity to network, explore career options, and even land a job. Here’s how you can prepare to make the most of it:

Before the Job Fair

  • Research the Companies – Check the list of participating employers and prioritize the ones you're most interested in. Learn about their industries, job openings, and company culture.

  • Update Your Resume – Target your resume for the types of roles you’re seeking and bring multiple copies.

  • Practice Your Elevator Pitch – Prepare a short, introduction about yourself, your skills, and your career goals. This should not be a personal story - but a professional summary.

  • Dress Professionally – First impressions matter! Wear business casual or professional attire.

  • Prepare Questions – Have questions ready for recruiters, such as “What skills are most valued in this role?” or “What’s the company’s culture like?”

During the Job Fair

  • Arrive Early – Some recruiters may leave early, and arriving early gives you time to meet people and become familiar with the layout of the room.

  • Be Confident & Professional – Greet recruiters with a firm handshake and maintain good eye contact.

  • Take Notes – Write down details about companies and recruiters to follow up later.

  • Collect Business Cards – Gather contact information for follow-up and networking.

After the Job Fair

  • Send Thank-You Emails – Follow up with people you spoke with, thanking them for their time and directly stating your interest.

  • Connect on LinkedIn – Expand your professional network by connecting with those you met.

  • Apply to Open Positions – If a recruiter mentioned an opportunity, follow through and submit your application.
