Maryland’s Wage Transparency Requirements
By Patty McDonald, PHR, CWDP, Program Manager, Business and Career Services
Are your job postings compliant? Maryland’s Wage Transparency Law introduced requirements for employers to promote transparency and reduce pay disparities and encourage open and informed conversations about compensation.
Effective October 1, 2024, all employers in Maryland need to include more detailed information in their job postings. In addition to providing a basic description of the position’s responsibilities, postings need to include information about wage ranges, and benefits. Wage information should include the full pay range for the position—from minimum to maximum—and note any additional compensation such as bonuses, shift differentials, or overtime. Also list additional benefits available such as paid or unpaid time-off, employer provided insurance, and/or other perks.
These requirements apply to job postings on company websites, social media, or through a third party. For abbreviated postings—like those on social media or signs—consider including a link or QR code directing applicants to the full posting details.
If you haven’t already:
Review and update job descriptions and compensation structures. Ensure job descriptions and compensation structures are current. Document wage ranges for all positions.
Train hiring managers on compliant practices. Ensure that wage ranges and job descriptions are readily available when requested by an applicant, before any discussions about compensation and/or making an offer.
Establish procedures for responding to wage range requests. Update job posting templates and recruitment materials and policies/processes and establish a process for responding to wage and job description requests.
