How to Stay Positive When the Job Search Feels Hopeless

By Shanna Dextradeur, Program Assistant, Employment & Training Services Team

Searching for a job can be discouraging and frustrating. Spending hours searching for jobs, submitting applications, and tweaking your resume to match job descriptions can start to feel like a full-time job. One day you might feel motivated and hopeful, and the next, overwhelmed by another day of silence or rejection.

After all your hard work, getting no response or seeing yet another rejection can be incredibly disheartening. If you're feeling this way, do not lose hope. You are not alone and it's completely okay to feel exhausted, frustrated, or stuck.

Progress Looks Different for Everyone

Progress in your job search can be as simple as:

  • Updating your resume or cover letter

  • Landing an interview, even if it doesn't lead to a job

  • Learning a new skill

  • Reaching out to someone on LinkedIn

These might seem like small wins, but they’re meaningful. Every step brings you closer to the right opportunity, even if it’s not noticeable yet.

Always remember progress is progress, no matter how small.

Comparison Is the Thief of Joy

It is easy to look at your friends, family, or other individuals and wonder “why can't that be me?”

Comparing your journey to others can steal your motivation and confidence. What you need to understand is that everyone's journey is different and everyone moves at different paces. Stay focused on your goals and the steps you're taking to reach your highest potential. You are not behind; you are on your own path.

Create a Routine

Creating a structure could help bring stability and ease the stress of job searching. Try setting some time aside each day or a few times a week to:

  • Check job boards and career sites

  • Search and apply to jobs

  • Research companies

  • Network or attend events

  • Practice interview questions

  • Update your resume, cover letter, or LinkedIn profile

Staying consistent will make a big difference over time.

Take Care of Yourself

When you are stressed, self-care is essential. Make time to take care of yourself during stressful times.

Make time to:

  • Take breaks to relax

  • Go for a walk or get outside

  • Spend time with people who lift you up

  • Revisit a hobby

  • Get rest and eat well

  • Do something that brings you joy

The better you feel emotionally and mentally, the more you will show up for yourself and your next opportunity.

You Got This!

Even if you don't see results yet, every small step brings you closer to your next opportunity. The resume you updated this week could land you an interview. Reaching out to people on LinkedIn may introduce you a life changing connection.

Don't give up and believe in yourself even on the hardest days.
