Interview Tips for Youth & Young Adults
By Paige Marley, Employment and Training Consultant, Youth and Young Adults
Interviewing can be an intimidating experience, especially if it's your first time doing so, but with the right preparation, you can find success and make a lasting impression. The following are some tips and basic guidelines to follow before, during, and after the interview process.
First and foremost, make sure you research the company and the role you are applying for prior to the interview. Understanding the company’s mission, values, and recent achievements will not only help you tailor your responses but also show your genuine interest in the position.
Additionally, you should practice common interview questions and answers. You can find these with a quick Google search or connect with us for resources and a mock interview session, whether virtually, by appointment, or as a walk-in during Job Search Support hours. Doing this will help you articulate your thoughts clearly and confidently during the actual interview, even if the questions they ask aren’t exactly the same as the ones you practiced. When answering the questions, remember to highlight your skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job, even if they come from volunteer work or school projects. Experience can come from anywhere; it doesn’t just have to be from a job.
On the day of the interview, dress appropriately and arrive 5-10 minutes early. Your appearance and punctuality reflect your professionalism and respect for the opportunity. During the interview, maintain good eye contact, listen carefully, and answer questions thoughtfully. When given the opportunity, usually at the end of the interview, it’s important to ask insightful questions about the role and the company. This demonstrates your enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. For example, you can ask about the work environment, expectations for your role, or growth and development opportunities.
Finally, follow up with a thank you email after the interview, expressing your appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position. This small gesture can leave a positive impression and set you apart from other candidates.
