What is a Recovery-Friendly Workplace?

By Diana Campbell, Program Specialist, Resilient Frederick County, Employment & Training Services Team

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are 13.3 million workers—nearly 9% of the U.S. workforce—who report being in recovery from a past or present substance use disorder. A Recovery-Friendly Workplace (RFW) is an environment that actively supports employees recovering from substance use disorders (SUDs) and mental health challenges, promoting health, wellness, and productivity. These workplaces recognize recovery as a strength and foster a culture of inclusion, support, and opportunity.

Benefits for Employers

Improved Retention and Loyalty
Employees in recovery often show strong commitment to employers who support them. This leads to lower turnover rates and reduced hiring and training costs.

Increased Productivity
With the right support, individuals in recovery can thrive professionally. Recovery-friendly policies help reduce absenteeism and presenteeism, boosting overall workplace efficiency.

Enhanced Workplace Culture
Promoting recovery reduces stigma and fosters a culture of empathy, trust, and openness. This can improve morale and teamwork across the organization.

Reduced Healthcare and Legal Costs
Supporting recovery can lead to fewer workplace accidents, lower insurance premiums, and decreased legal liabilities related to substance misuse.

Benefits for Employees

Supportive Environment
Employees feel safer and more valued when their workplace acknowledges and supports their recovery journey.

Access to Resources
RFWs often provide access to counseling, peer support, and flexible policies that help individuals maintain their recovery while meeting job responsibilities.

Reduced Stigma
A recovery-friendly culture helps reduce shame and isolation, encouraging employees to seek help without fear of judgment or job loss.

Opportunities for Growth
With support, employees in recovery can focus on personal and professional development, contributing meaningfully to their teams and careers.
