Finding Steady Progress in February: Small Steps for Jobseekers

By Diana Campbell, Employment & Training Services Lead

February can feel like a long stretch of winter. The days are still short, routines can feel repetitive, and motivation sometimes dips. If you’re working toward employment, you may notice this season feels heavier. You’re not alone. And a slower month does not mean you’re falling behind.

Progress is Not Always Fast

Looking for work or building new skills takes energy. Some days will feel productive and hopeful. Others may feel uncertain or tiring. Growth rarely happens in a straight line. Showing up—even in small ways—is still progress. Small Goals Create Momentum Instead of focusing on everything at once, try choosing one small step each day:

• Update one section of your resume

• Practice one interview question

• Make one phone call or send one application

Small actions build progress over time.

Take Care of Your Energy

The winter months can be taxing on our energy levels. Notice yours, and plan tasks when you feel most focused. Take short breaks. Step outside for light and fresh air when possible. Rest is part of productivity—not the opposite of it.

Stay Connected

Isolation can make challenges feel bigger. Prioritizing reaching out to your networks. Asking for support is a sign of strength.

Celebrate What You’re Doing Well

At the end of the day, ask yourself: What is one thing I handled with effort or courage today? It might be attending a workshop, working on your resume, or simply trying again. Celebrate the small steps.

February may feel quiet, but it is still a month of growth. With steady steps, support, and self-compassion, you will continue moving forward.
