U.S. Department of Agriculture

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research Unit, a part of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), is located at Fort Detrick. Research focuses primarily on new or emerging plant pathogens which are not yet established in the U.S. and which must be kept under containment.

There are a variety of scientific disciplines working at this laboratory to prevent non-indigenous weeds and/or diseases from destroying valuable plant crops in the United States. Among the research disciplines at work here are plant pathologists, molecular biologists, plant physiologists, and biologists.

"Frederick County Workforce Services provided valuable training and seminars to prepare for a new role. My Career Specialist also always treated me with dignity and respect, which was so appreciated. She also gave me hope and encouragement during my career transition process. In this economy the unemployed are often shunned and discounted, so working with someone that found value in me and believed in me helped me maintain my confidence and a positive outlook."
