Who should I use for a reference? Do I have to use a previous supervisor?

The Hiring Process

You don’t have to use past supervisors on your own reference sheet unless the potential employer requires you to do so. Keep in mind that they can often get this information from your employment application. References should be chosen with the following criteria in mind: Is the person willing to be a reference on your behalf? (You should always ask their permission first.) Will the person say positive things about you? Does the person know you through your work or from being a volunteer or member of organization so that they can speak of your traits, such as dependability, conscientiousness, following directions, etc.? What level of responsibility do they have in their job? (Include their job title on your reference sheet.) How long has the person known you? Is the person related to you? (Preferably not.)
