"What is the best way for a job candidate to prepare for an interview?"

Research the company thoroughly on their website, the internet, and people you know who work there. Glassdoor is also great resource. Try to understand what they’re looking for and how you can contribute to the organization to help them achieve their goals.

Prepare for behavioral questions by recalling situations when you had success working on a team or leading a team; when you came up with a creative solution to a tough problem, when you had to prioritize tasks, and when you made a mistake but turned it around. Think about your greatest victory and what led to it. If you prepare about 6 or 7 scenarios, you’ll have a bank to pull from when thrown a question that starts with, “Tell me about a time when…” Of course, be prepared to talk about your strengths and weaknesses relative to the workplace. When addressing a weakness, describe the lessons you’ve learned, steps you’ve taken, or personal growth that has come from recognizing this weakness.

When helping people to prepare for interviews, I always go back to the handouts that I got from Frederick County Workforce Services. They’ve got a fantastic list of behavioral questions that helped me and lots of people I’ve coached to get jobs!
