LinkedIn vs. Traditional Resumes
Everyone says that LinkedIn is important for job search. Why can’t I just send a resume to the employer?
You can, if you aren’t in a big hurry to get a job.
LinkedIn is always adding new features to enhance job search and networking capabilities. Networking – making yourself known to people who can help your job search – has always been the fastest and most reliable way to find jobs. Three quarters of job seekers find work that way.
Some companies have elaborate systems of finding candidates to work for them; they ignore those systems and use LinkedIn instead.
LinkedIn includes many valuable features that resumes just don’t cover. With LinkedIn, you can describe your skills and experience in a conversational manner, to help employers understand your capabilities. You can reach out to people you’d never come across in your everyday life. You can even ask your connections to write Recommendations for you. It’s like having your references and everything they’d say attached to your resume.
In addition, employers can find you by using the search feature. They put a job title in the search box and see whose profile it finds. They can choose a profile from the list and often call the person directly to come in for an interview. If they’re lucky, they can hire the person right away, saving themselves a lot of time and trouble.
Because of these features, employers love LinkedIn. About 90% of them use it. It makes their lives so much easier. We don’t have to love it; but we’re going to have to use it more and more.
Resumes have their place, and probably always will. Keep yours up to date, and use it when an employer asks for it. But adding a great LinkedIn profile, and using it for networking, will add a great new dimension to your job search, and probably get you into that new job a lot quicker.
