The Literacy Council of Frederick County

The mission of the Literacy Council of Frederick County is to empower individuals through literacy. Committed to fostering a community where everyone can achieve their full potential, the Council focuses on eradicating illiteracy and promoting lifelong learning. The organization provided accessible, individualized literacy programs addressing the diverse needs of over 500 Frederick adult learners last year.

Below are a few of the many resources available through the Literacy Council:

Adult Literacy: Tailored one-on-one tutoring for adults to enhance their reading, writing, and communication skills, ultimately opening doors to improved employment opportunities and increased independence. 

English Language Learners: Comprehensive language support services and classes for non-native English speakers, facilitating cultural integration and empowering individuals to thrive in a language-diverse society. 

Workplace Classes, Community Classes and Parent Literacy: The team collaborates with local businesses, schools, and community organizations to create a network of support for literacy initiatives. Through these partnerships, the Literacy Council amplifies their impact and brings services and support to individuals who need them. 

Armed with an impressive army of 160 volunteers, the Literacy Council truly excels at harnessing the power of the Frederick’s sense of community filled with individuals who generously contribute their time and expertise to tutor, mentor, and guide learners, fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment. By embracing a holistic approach, the Literacy Council of Frederick County effectively breaks down barriers, builds bridges, and empowers individuals to participate fully in the social, economic, and cultural life of the community.
